Power Transmission Transmission system operator, Norway
Fault location and fingerprints for 1981 paper-insulated cables.
LIRA® located a short circuit on an 11.2 km, 420 kV cable system from 1981 and fingerprinted the remaining cables for future monitoring.
The challenge
A transmission system operator in Norway needed fault detection and location across multiple 420 kV paper-insulated cables installed in 1981, with a total length of 11.2 km.
The approach
A LIRA® measurement detected a short circuit 4,154 m from the measurement point, located with better than 0.3% accuracy. Good fingerprints were also taken from the other cables, as a reference for future monitoring, comparison and assessment of ageing.
The outcome
- Short response time and a targeted repair, thanks to high location accuracy
- Lost production avoided through regular monitoring and preventive measures
- A basis for future targeted maintenance built on cable health knowledge
- Less time on site, with fewer people and lower health and safety risks
