The challenge
An offshore wind operator in Portugal suspected a fault in the subsea joints of a 6.8 km XLPE offshore cable. TDR did not identify the fault.
The approach
Wirescan used LIRA® to measure between phases, identifying the fault and locating it 135 m before the first subsea joint on the blue phase.
The outcome
- An estimated saving of EUR 600,000, with less loss thanks to a targeted repair
- Uncertainty about joint failure removed
- Accurate fault location, plus overall knowledge of cable condition and points of concern
- Less time on site, with fewer people and lower health and safety risks
