LIRA® located a fault on a damaged offshore cable to within 0.01% accuracy, saving an estimated EUR 600,000.
The challenge
An offshore cable operated by a transmission system operator in Sweden was cut by external influence. The exact length of the cable was unknown, which made the fault harder to locate.
The approach
Wirescan established the velocity ratio with a LIRA® measurement on the spare cable, then detected the fault 3,595 m from the measurement point. Later inspection showed the fault was located with 0.01% accuracy.
