Total and Wirescan sign contract on digitalised condition monitoring of energised cables

Wirescan has signed a Stage 1 pilot contract with Total for Wirescan Digital Online monitoring of energised subsea cables at an offshore facility in Qatar.

During the past three years Wirescan in cooperation with SINTEF, the E&P branch of Total, Siemens, and Schlumberger has developed and demonstrated technology for LIRA based condition monitoring of energized cables. Based on this technology development, Wirescan AS is in the process of establishing a series of Stage 1-projects in Oil and Gas, renewables and electric distribution grid with the objective to establish the LIRA technology and Wirescan Digital products as industry standards for both offline and online cable condition monitoring.

Wirescan Digital Online is based on the Wirescan proprietary, patented and non-destructive LIRA Technology (Line Impedance Resonance Analysis) which has been utilized in all segments of the cable market during the past ten years. Today, LIRA is the most powerful online and offline cable condition assessment tools available in the market. The engine in Wirescan Digital solution is the LIRA software which utilizes automated data acquisition and complex digital signal processing to produce more than ten cable condition related parameters. Wirescan Digital is a cloud-based solution providing real-time big data analysis enabling cable owners and operators to digitalize condition monitoring of their most important assets.

On November 26th Wirescan AS signed a contract with Total on a Stage 1 Pilot Project establishing the Wirescan Digital Online system for condition monitoring of energized subsea cables at one of Total’s offshore facilities in Qatar. The project targets installation and operation of the pilot system early Q3 2019 and will monitor both new and aged cables.

“This technology will be tested by Total R&D as part of an overall goal to realize a real-time subsea power cable degradation monitoring capability. This Pilot is an important step in refining and evaluating the system performance in a subsea operational context.”
